StoriesBarretts Privateers Eddystone Light A Better Place To Be Bookends Theme First Christmas Away From Home Grandma was a Poet The Green Fields Of France Hello In There If Mare Were Here Mary Ellen Carter Rollng Home The Rose Of Allandale Song At The End Of The Movie Sparrow Witch Of The Westmere Land Stories is one of our early recordings. It was recorded live to one of those cheap little four track recorders in 1989. We need to stress the “cheap” part of the description. The recording was made in the Lido Lounge of the steamship Bermuda Star somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. This one is really wysiwyg as they say. There was no opportunity to edit anything. All the mistakes are on there! You may hear sounds in the background that sound a bit “shippy!”.We used to call this cd “Bermuda Star” when it was offered only on cassette. |

Barretts Privateers
Barrett’s Privateers was written and performed originally by Stan Rogers. He’s one of Lonnie’s favourite singer songwriters. The song talks about Elcid Barrett, captain of a would be privateer in the late 1700’s around the time of the American revolution. Letters of marque were issued giving private captains the “right” to commit what amounted to piracy on the property of others not in agreement with the king. Of course the opposing side had the same “privileges!” Anyway Barrett’s piracy meets with immediate and dismal failure at the hands of an American merchantman. A fine and well crafted song.
Eddystone Light
This rendition of the old favourite “Eddystone Light” is an upbeat version of the song. It’s a fanciful tale of a lighthouse keeper who has a tryst with a mermaid. Three offspring issue from this meeting… a hilarious tale.
A Better Place To Be
A Better Place To Be is Harry Chapin at his very best. If this one doesn’t make you think and appreciate… nothing will.
Bookends Theme
Bookends Theme is one of the many thoughtful songs written by the great Paul Simon. This lyrical piece grows in meaning and import as we listen to it through our aging ears… preserve your memories… they’re all that’s left you.
First Christmas Away From Home
First Christmas Away From Home is another beautiful song by the late Stan Rogers. A first Christmas away from home happens to other than just children… listen to this one.
Grandma was a Poet
Grandma Was A Poet was written by another truly proficient lyricist; Pierce Pettis. It’s a story of a “bookish” southern girl living around the time of the Great Depression. Another story of life’s road it’s both sad and sweet. Listen carefully.
The Green Fields Of France
The Green Fields Of France is an excellent piece written by a Scotsman now living in Australia, Eric Bogle. Eric’s (and our) purpose in performing this song is to underscore the idiocy of war… and perhaps in some small but effective way contribute to it’s eradication. We should be able to come up with a better solution…
Hello In There
Hello In There comes from John Prine. Very few writers have devised a more effective way to portray a mundane and hopeless life. It’s unfortunate how lonely most of us are even in a crowd or in the company of those we “love.” This song teaches a good lesson; just say “Hello in there.”
If Mare Were Here
If Mary Were Here was penned by a truly magnificent story teller and human being… Harry Chapin. It is truly a tragedy when people of his caliber die so young. This is a story of love on the rocks.
Mary Ellen Carter
Mary Ellen Carter is a fine allegorical song by Stan Rogers. Don’t give up your dreams. Fight for them till the end. We all know about “smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go” don’t we?
Rollng Home
Rolling Home is a chantey type song that depicts the times when wooden ships and iron men sailed around Cape Horn to bring back riches from the far east. A rollicking song. We liked doing this one on the ship!
The Rose Of Allandale
The Rose Of Allandale is a quintessential Irish ballad in waltz time. Songs like this are why we specialize in Celtic Music!
Song At The End Of The Movie
Song At The End Of The Movie is another opus by Pierce Pettis. This song was also recorded by Joan Baez. Another lament about failed love… very pretty.
Sparrow
Sparrow is by Don Oja Dunaway. He’s a terrific folk singer based at Saint Augustine, Florida. We used to go see him at the Milltop whenever we could find time in our running around the country performing. This is a song that underscores the value of life. He who loves the tiny sparrow also loves us!
Witch Of The Westmere Land
Witch Of The Westmere Land is by none other than the well loved Scot Archie Fisher. We first heard it performed by Stan Rogers. We perform this song with the lute and psaltery at Renaissance Faires and Celtic Festivals everywhere. It’s a great knight in shining armour song with a lot of magic thrown in… like The Hobbit! You’ll like this one it’s a great story.
